Food in Bali: Strange or just different?

As already known, the food in Asia is always different from the one in the western part of the world. It is different in regards to herbs, gravy, spices and especially ingredients. Some people love it and some people hate it or moreover cannot handle it. There are dishes which are not only different but totally strange for the western people, and most of the time you will just try it once.

Food in Bali

Here are some example of strange dishes and food in Bali. With this, you are prepared if you go to Bali and enter a restaurant:

Nangka (Jackfruit) curry: Some people expect the Nangka to be a meat, but it is not, it is just the tropical fruit Jackfruit. In Indonesia, the young Jackfruit is seen as a vegetable and prepared as a kind of curry. It is served with rice or rice cakes.

Ghoat dick: Some people in Bali think, that if they eat the male ghoat dick, they can increase the male hormones.

Babi guling: Another famous Balinese dish. It is a roasted young pig, the suckling. For a lot of Balinese, this is their favourite dish.

Turtle meat: A really cultural dish in Bali. In earlier times, the Balinese ate this a lot, but nowadays it is banned.

Food in BaliLawar: This is a famous, Balinese dish made from pig’s blood and spices. Different kinds of vegetables, coconuts and minced meat are added and seasoned with rich herbs, spices and blood. You should it this dish within half a day, otherwise, it will be gone bad.

Deep-fried dragonflies: A kind of snack. Dragonflies fried in a deep fryer.

Sago Worms: Balinese consider sago worms to be a real treat. The taste is kind of pulpy and they are prepared as roasted or in a stew.

Bats: Prepared as grilled or deep-fried, Balinese people eat the bats as a whole, with the bones and everything. Another preparation is cutting them into pieces and putting them in a soup or stew.

Food in Bali

Durian: A tropical fruit of south-east Asia which is famous for its disgusting smell. Even if it could taste good, almost everybody is shocked about the smell and does not want to try it.

Buah Keluak: This is a nut or better said, the seed of the kepayang tree. Raw, it is really poisonous. but when cooked and put into a curry, it is really delicious and regarded as a truffle of Asia.

And for the last ‘delicious’ part of your Balinese meal, I want to show you a nice drink 😉

Cobra Blood: After eating all this, you can have a nice drink of warm cobra blood. It is seen as a kind of aphrodisiac.
