Lombok Paradise

We hope you had a great labor day! *yawns* we wish we were in lazy Lombok!

When visiting Bali, it may be worth considering a visit to Lombok for its rustic old-world charm and laid back lifestyles. Nature lovers will adore Lombok Island, which is relatively undeveloped compared to Bali. Expect pristine beaches, sparkling waterfalls, and a peaceful environment set against the backdrop of the spectacular volcano of Mount Rinjani.

Getting to Lombok:

Reaching Lombok from Bali is relatively easy and it can be reached through boat or by taking a short flight there. Garuda Indonesia flies to Lombok everyday from Bali, and it takes only half an hour!

If you prefer to stay closer to the ground and don’t mind getting a little wet, you can take a boat from Padang Bai harbour and will take you to Lombok. If you opt for public ferries, they depart every hour, and the crossing will take you 4-5 hours. A faster ferry is available, which shaves off  a couple of hours off your ride. It takes only 1-2 hours to cross. Beware that this ride is bumpy and described as ‘treacherous’ by some. Probably not for those who get seasick easily.

Many previous visitors recommend flying to save time and a possible case of sea sickness. Of course, if you are up for the adventure, boat rides give you a lovely view of the coastal surroundings.

Lombok Cidomos

You may find it interesting in Lombok to travel around by horse drawn carts, also known as Cidomos. These are used in short distances, and it is a great source of fun for visitors who enjoy the novelty of being ferried around by a horse.

Waterfalls

Lombok is home to stunning waterfalls, and it will be well worth your time to visit some of them whilst you are there. Sedang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfall lies at the foot of Mount Rinjani, and can easily be accessed on foot. It is just a 15 minutes walk till you reach the first fall (Sendang Gile), and another 25 minutes trek further in if you wish to reach the second fall (Tiu Kelep). Local guides will often accompany you for a fee. You can then splash around and enjoy the cool water in relatively quiet surroundings. A local myth says that you become younger when you swim behind the waterfall at Tiu Kelep. Whether you believe it or not, the reinvigorating experience is certainly not to be missed. Other waterfalls you may wish to explore include the Benang Stokal and Benang Kelambu waterfall.

Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani easily takes the title of the most stunning natural attraction in Lombok. Those who are physically fit will enjoy a trek up the volcano to reach the lake at the crater rim. There are many trekking guide companies, be sure to book with a reputable guide in order to enjoy the best experience you can get. Pack light but be sure to take along waterproof clothing and some warm clothing, as the summit can be chilly. Porters will carry the camp equipment but you will be responsible for your personal belongings. It is not an easy trek, but those who persevere will be rewarded with scenic views along the way, topped by the breathtaking view you can expect when you reach the top.

Sembalun Village

For those who cannot make the climb up Mount Rinjani, fret not. You can still enjoy the amazing natural beauty of Lombok from Sembalun village. Most trekkers up Mount Rinjani start from this village, and even though you will not head up, there is plenty to explore around here. Sembalun village is located in a rich, fertile valley behind Mount Rinjani. It is famous for growing rice and garlic and there are patches of other vegetables and strawberries. Also observe the weavers at work or watch traditional dance displays. Home stays can be arranged for you to learn more about local culture.

Sukarara Weavers

If you have been sufficiently charmed by the locals, a visit to Sukarara weavers will thrill you. You can observe traditional weavers at work as well as get to purchase some of their beautiful cloth. There is a very good selection of fine textiles on display, and worth taking a look at. You might even be allowed to try your hand at the weaving if you are lucky!
