Expat life in Bali: myths and realities !

What happens when a French blonde girl leaves the country alone for a 6 month stay in Bali? Is what all of our family and friends suggest before departure true?

So lucky! You get to go to Bali! – True !  Yes I know 🙂

It will be sunny all the time … If you told me that this morning after I arrived completely wet at the office from a downpour, I would have laughed …
But anyway, this is not wrong! In Bali, it’s summer 10 months out of 12. The rest of the time? Well… it’s spring!

So, you’re going to spend your time sunbathing near the pool: WRONG! After 6 months I’m still white! Not enough sun or just my fair skin? You decide.

Of course! You’re not going to work at all: Double wrong !
That may be the reason for my white skin…

I don’t care, ‘cause anyway, you gonna eat rice all the time …: Ok, that’s true ! …
But after a while, you don’t notice it anymore! And there are several kinds of rice:  white, yellow, brown, spicy … Ok, it’s still rice!

… And come back so skinny! I would like that to be true …
But Balinese food is really REALLY good! Although almost everything contains rice, it is so varied that you can never get enough!

In addition, I think they eat super spicy there… With your peppers and chili allergy, it will be hard! Ah yes! That’s true …
When the rice is orange, it’s a bad sign for sensitive stomachs! Moreover, speaking of sensitive stomachs: when dining at an Indo restaurant, eat local and forget about European food!
Another tip : “Tidak Pedas” means “not spicy” in Bahasa Indonesia 😉

You will miss French breakfast sooo much! Not so true actually!
Café Moka, Mr. Spoon, Bali Deli (the list goes on) are all the official sponsors of chocolate croissants in the morning and they are pretty good! So, it was perhaps not worthy to hide a cargo of pastries in my hand luggage…
On the other hand, I would not say the same for cheese and “charcuterie”…

Life in Bali must be so cheap! Yes and no!
Ok, I eat for 4 USD per day, but prices become relative when you see that the Balinese monthly wage is around 120 USD. Fortunately for everyone, Warungs exist (small Indonesian restaurants). So, if we live like an Indonesian, life is cheap, but when you approach the tourist areas, the bill skyrockets…

And you’re not gonna feel alone at the other end of the world? Not so much!
When you are an expat, you are always meeting new people and making new friends, locals as well as expats! So, if one makes the effort to put themselves out there, you are not alone for long.

Moreover, Bali is an island, you’ll get bored quickly: No way!
Bali is much bigger than it appears once you have a closer look. Between the waterfalls in the mountains, hidden temples in the Ubud jungle, secret Bukit beaches and all restaurants of Seminyak to test, there is plenty to do!
And what is also nice about Bali, is that it has quite a few neighboring islands! In just a couple of hours by boat and plane, landscape and culture changes completely!

OMG, you must surf every day and be so good by now! If I was a surfer, probably! But I’m not a surfer, so no…! Too bad!

Be careful, I heard that driving a scooter in Bali is dangerous. Not wrong … We just need to be careful and remember a few important things! At the end of the day, it’s true that we spend most of our time on the scooter in Bali.

Bali- once you’re there, you’re never coming home! Up to you for this one 😉
