Wild Indonesia: Endangered Balinese wildlife

Indonesia is home to stunning diversity of animals, and many of them are rare, exotic and beautiful. Sadly, some of them are fast becoming endangered, or even extinct, due to loss of habitat, poaching or unrestrained hunting. Here are three of the creatures that Bali is or used to be home to.

  1. Bali Starling

The Bali Starling, also known as the Bali Myna, is the regional mascot of Bali, but is also critically endangered. It is featured on the Indonesian 200 rupiah coin. The last places in Bali where they can be found in the wild is the West Bali National Park, as well as the island of Nusa Penida.

  1. Bali Tiger

The Bali Tiger, smallest of all sub-species of tigers, is sadly extinct. The Bali Tiger, which has never been captured on film, has a deeper, darker orange fur, with some spots in between the stripes. The last Bali Tiger to have been recorded to be shot was a female, shot on September 27, 1937.

  1. Banteng

Also known as the Balinese cow, wild Banteng is considered to be endangered and the population of Bantengs in Asia has decreased by 80%. However, they do exist in domesticity in abundance.
