Well, everyone loves a good laugh every now and then, and the Balinese are no different. There is nothing more they love than a good dose of humo
r in their conversations.
However, those unfamiliar with Balinese humor may feel shocked. Given the great effort to be polite in all forms of manner and speech, it surprises many that a good joke by Balinese standards can often be one that is off color or even crude. The Balinese will tease about anything from squint eyes to bald heads, and they will not let up an opportunity to crack jokes revolving around sex. Even the children joke about such things! Surprising isn’t it?
Oh, but there is a catch. Joke about these colorful topics all you want, but jokes should not cross into being offensive. Favorite types of jokes are those which have puns and double meanings, and the teller of the joke is often applauded for his ingenuity.
