A cultural retreat found on the hillside in the serene village of Melayang, a short drive from Ubud, Villa Awang Awang is one of five villas providing guests a way to live amid luscious forests, verdant nature, and stunning views of the Petanu river and the steep valley. The villa has been designed with a mind to offer a space conducive for meditation and relaxation, ideal for a yoga retreat. With five bedrooms and an infinity swimming pool, you need not worry about space.
Featuring traditional interiors laced with antiques collected from across Indonesia, sculptures, a Balinese temple visited daily by the village priest, and other intriguing sights, the villa is just what you need to rest your mind, body, and soul.
Villa Awang Awang hosts five bedrooms; three found on the highest floor and two on the middle. The master bedroom is found on the upper floor under a high-soaring alang-alang ceiling furnished with a four-poster, queen-sized bed fashioned out of reclaimed teak-wood. The second and third bedroom are furnished with a queen bed and twin beds, respectively.
The master bathroom has an outdoor shower on the deck and a terrazzo bathtub and the other two bedrooms share a bathroom equipped with a luxurious terrazzo bathtub.
Each bedroom is designed in a unique and authentic manner featuring plenty of reused natural material to promote sustainable living. Javanese wooden doors, restored furniture, and old, antique cabinets make up the bedrooms. The fourth and fifth bedrooms are furnished with queen-sized beds and one of them even leads to the terrace for panoramic views. Sharing a marble bathroom, the two rooms enjoy the amenities including a terrazzo bathtub and outdoor shower.
The stunning infinity swimming pool at Villa Awang Awang is found on the lowest level with views that sweep across the valley below encompassing the verdure of the forests, luscious flora, and the river that flows along. The beautiful and breathtaking view is simply dazzling and will immediately make you feel at ease. Just beside the pool stands the sun deck or terrace which houses a few sun chairs and seating for guests to make sure you can enjoy your time outdoors uninterrupted.
Steps leading up from the sun deck takes you to the open-planned living area at Villa Awang Awang that is authentically Indonesian from everything to its architecture, furnishings, to décor. The thatched pavilion features exposed concrete columns and walls along a balustrade, rustic furniture, wicker chairs, traditional weaving, and local artwork. While overlooking the lush flora that surrounds the villa, the living room is essentially a home away from home for guests. There are several sitting areas; some that are close to the terrace, while some that stand in the middle of the room. Hanging from the ceiling are traditional chandeliers that light up the room once the sun sets over the horizon.
The dining area is on the second floor of the villa with a 10-seater dining table made out of reclaimed Javanese wood. The gorgeous room features glass lanterns hanging from the alang-alang ceiling and Dutch-era seating for a colonial vibe. This space is excellent for a few hours of relaxation enjoying a view of the forests with a cup of tea. The chilly air is enough along with ceiling fans to keep you in a comfortable state. Guests have access to the modern kitchen equipped with appliances, terrazzo countertops, etc.
There is an on-site manager to look after guests and even help with planning your itinerary including transportation and excursions. The villa car is available for an additional cost however, you enjoy a complimentary breakfast. There is housekeeping and security lent to guests of the villa.
The villa is a 10-minute drive from Ubud, known as the cultural and artistic centre of Bali with health cafes, ancient temples like Uluwatu Temple, and Monkey Forest, the town is thriving and ever ready to greet travellers. The village of Melayang is laidback and offers you a chance to unwind in the lap of nature.
Everything was perfect! Starting with the location, where we felt like we are the only people staying in that part of Ubud, with views of the jungle, rice fields and our infinity pool. Its 10min drive to central Ubud and a short drive to Tegalalang Rice terraces. Our villa was enormous, it felt like an old Dutch colonial mansion, rooms were beautiful and spacious, bathrooms with outdoor (and indoor) showers were absolutely amazing! Staff couldn’t be more friendly. Food can be ordered to your villa, which is very convenient and it was delicious. You can order massage and have it done in your villa, listening to sounds of the jungle, we did and we felt we were in heaven. We stayed for 2nights as a group of 6 girls, and we didn't want to leave!
I can;t recommend Villa Awang Awang highly enough. This place oozes charms everywhere you look! I stayed in the 5 Bedroom Villa which is beautifully tucked away on a hill overlooking the valley. The villa is split into 3 levels and has its own pool at the lowest level (size is good). You could hear the flows of the river from the bottom of the valley and this place is so tranquil. The sound of nature was everywhere. The room I stayed in was really nice and the view from the room was also breathtaking. Breakfast was excellent and served at the convenience of your villa. All you have to do is to fill out a form the night before and indicate what you would like to have for your breakfast. If you decide to take a stroll around the property, as you walk around, you might see macaques monkey swinging among the the lush surroundings as you walk down to the lower part of the property. I really like the fact that the villa is a little bit outside of Ubud, away from the hustle and bustle. I would highly recommend Villa Awang Awang for your stay in Ubud.
What an experience!! Staying here was quite simply one of the most amazing and wonderful experiences of my life. Bali is such a beautiful place to have the opportunity to visit. I visited with my daughter and son-in-law and their three young daughters for the first fortnight in April and it truly was the ‘holiday of a lifetime’. And the whole experience was as good as it was because of the Villa Awang Awang staff. I can’t imagine staying anywhere better in Bali than villa Awang Awang. It had everything: everything we needed in terms of comfortable and very individual accommodation; good food - prepared as we wanted and when we wanted; cleanliness; peace: space; beautiful swimming pools; and outstanding as all of that was, the remarkable, friendly, caring, accommodating, hospitable staff, each and every one of them, who made us feel like family, or like old friends. Not only that but they took us to places we could not have known about otherwise and included us in their own lives, far beyond the ‘call of duty’. Thank you so much, all of you. Thank you too, for living out your beautiful and heart- warming and loving living faith and life and values; what an inspiration and encouragement. God bless you all. Whenever I’m fortunate enough to visit in future, I cannot think of any way in which I could have a better experience than here. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
